Instantly recognisable for its quirky, square profile, the original CUBE was only available in Japan. Yet countless media appearances soon won the marque a global fan-base. Now, 10 years after its debut, the CUBE is back – dramatically rethought, but still fun, functional and uniquely slab-sided. Customers have a choice of 1.5-litre diesel or 1.6-litre petrol versions.
“The new Nissan CUBE will be bought by individuals who see it as an extension of their personality,” says Simon Thomas, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe. “CUBE customers are not show-offs, but style-conscious and open-minded.”
A uniquely organic development process created the newcomer. Intensely passionate about the project, designers, engineers and planners enjoyed unprecedented freedom to conceptualise, draw and add their ideas.
A long wheelbase effectively pushes the wheels into each corner. Combined with wide headlights and grille and short ‘tail’ section, this gives the CUBE its iconic ‘bulldog in sunglasses’ stance. Maintaining a sense of ‘pure design’, there are fewer character lines, lending simplicity and freshness to the look.
It’s all far more than just cosmetic. A-pillar positioning, and the asymmetrical wraparound side/rear window, boost visibility. With only a minimum area of the bonnet panel invisible and a tall seating position, the CUBE offers a stress-free driving experience.
Surprisingly roomy, the interior provides user-focused, lounge-like comfort for up to five passengers. The ‘Jacuzzi Curve’ layout’, sofa-style sliding rear bench seat and ‘floating meter pod’ driver’s area create an easy-to-customise space for interacting with friends.
Colourful ‘Magic Rubber Bands’ slip into cutouts on the door armrests, securing whatever personal effects are brought inside. Designed to both relax and enthrall, the faux-suede trim with ‘natural wave’ stitching is available in a choice of black or beige.
Funky colours like Witty Military, White Pearl, Sea Turquoise and Intense Red make each 2009 Nissan CUBE a real eye-catcher. Customers can also personalise their CUBE with sunroof designs and body stickers.
More than a fashion statement, the new CUBE is a mission statement. It says, ‘I’m serious about enjoying my life.’ And there’s nothing square about that…
